Sports Betting: Biggest Scandals


1. One of the oldest and most famous till date is called “The 1951 point-saving” scandal. It was a series of betting scandals recorded between 1948 and 1951 in USA. A total of 86 basketball matches was fixed in the meantime. 20 players and 14 gamblers were convicted in this pool of betting. Some of the big names related with the incidents are Jack Molinas, Sherman White, Ralph Beard and Alex Groza. Total amount recovered is still unknown till date. But some insiders say that it worth more than $ 22 million.
2. Through his fifteen years career, New York Giant player Hal chase has been convicted of betting several times but never proven. It was 1919 when he was finally banned from all major leagues. Later he was officially banned when he was finally caught while offering bribe to an umpire. It was found that in his career he has earned more than $ 35 million in betting and gambling.
3. Two British players Sean Long and Martin Gleeson were arrested in 2004 for fixing a rugby match between Bradford Bulls and St Helens. They were jointly fined around £ 10,100.
4. In 2007 a well-known NBA referee Tim Donaghy was accused of betting scandals. According to the report published by FBI, Tim Donaghy bet on the games in which he participated and his calls affect the point spread in those games. He received around $ 30,000 for the information he passed to bookie.
5. In 2010, due to a sting operation held by English newspaper “News of the World”, some of the members of Pakistan cricket team were convicted for süperbahis online 120. The situation got worse when the coach Bob Woolmer was found dead in his hotel apartment. The case is still under progress.
6. A big shock came in 2009 when it was learnt that around twenty matches of UEFA Europa League and UEFA Champions League were fixed. 7. An investigation by Europol, the European Union's law enforcement agency, convicted around 425 match officials and players of 15 countries related with betting in 2013. The money on the pot was an eye-hoping € 8.00.000.
These are some of the biggest scandals ever recorded. There are hundreds of more which are not even recorded. As a result of the scandals, the quality of sports is decreasing at random speed. The future of sports is in our hand.
